About the role
Reporting to the ACHPER NSW Board, the Executive Officer (EO) is responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of the organisation. This pivotal leadership role encompasses financial management, professional learning services, stakeholder engagement, revenue generation, team leadership, and organisational operations. The Executive Officer leads a small office team.

Key responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Governance

  • Advise the Board and support informed decision-making.
  • Develop and implement organisational strategy, annual operational plans and priorities.
  • Lead organisational change, continuous and implementation of Board decisions.
  • Ensure governance, legislative and regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate with ACHPER State and Territory branches and the National Office

Financial Management

  • Develop and manage organisational budgets and financial plans
  • Monitor financial performance and organisational sustainability.
  • Provide accurate and timely financial reports to the Board.
  • Identify new revenue opportunities and oversee grants, tenders and project budgets.

Revenue Generation & Business Development

  • Build and maintain a diverse portfolio of corporate, government and community partners, sponsors and supporters.
  • Generate funds through partnerships, sponsorships, grants, tenders and commercial opportunities.
  • Identify opportunities to expand professional learning, member services and resource offerings.
  • Develop business plans that support growth and innovation.

Professional Learning & Program Delivery

  • Lead the planning and delivery of high-quality professional learning services.
  • Ensure professional learning offerings meet the needs of educators.
  • Support the development of educational resources and programs.
  • Monitor program effectiveness and implement improvements where required.

Stakeholder Engagement & Advocacy

  • Advocate for excellence in Health and Physical Education across NSW and the ACT.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships across education, health, sport and recreation sectors.
  • Represent ACHPER NSW at industry forums, conferences and stakeholder meetings.
  • Build strategic partnerships that enhance the profile and impact of ACHPER NSW.

People Leadership & Operations

  • Lead and support a high-performing team.
  • Manage staff, contractors, suppliers and external vendors.
  • Oversee recruitment, performance management and staff development.
  • Ensure HR policies, procedures and workplace practices are maintained.
  • Drive operational efficiency through improved systems and processes.
  • Manage contracts and relationships with suppliers and service providers.

Selection Criteria Essential

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in business, management, education, sport, health or a related field; or equivalent senior leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience within a membership-based association, not-for-profit organisation, education, health, sport or recreation setting.
  • Proven experience developing and implementing organisational strategy.
  • Experience leading teams and successfully managing organisational change.
  • Strong financial management experience, including budgeting, forecasting and Board reporting.
  • Experience managing staff, contractors and external service providers.
  • Experience developing business opportunities and generating revenue.
  • Eligibility to work in Australia.
  • Current Working With Children Check (or ability to obtain one).
  • Satisfactory National Police Check.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Exceptional leadership, communication, negotiation and relationship management skills.
  • Strong understanding of ACHPER NSW’s purpose and the Health and Physical Education sector.
  • Demonstrated project management capability, including delivering outcomes on time and within budget.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across multiple sectors.
  • Ability to balance strategic thinking with operational delivery.
  • High-level written communication skills, including report writing, grant applications and tender development.

Desirable

  • Demonstrated success securing partnerships, sponsorships, grants or government funding.
  • Experience growing organisational revenue through corporate, government or community-based initiatives.
  • Experience working with a Board or governance committee.
  • Knowledge of professional learning delivery and educator engagement.
