The Topic: New Privacy Legislation
Managing the rights and obligations that arise from the relevant privacy laws in Australia is an ever present problem for all aspects of the Australian commercial community. Dealing with the private information of those you come in contact with on a day-to-day basis is closely regulated by law, and there are significant penalties for the infringement of the principles and rules.
On 12 March 2014 a new regime under the Privacy Act will come into force nationwide. It imposes important changes on much of the Australian community, including not-for-profit entities and charities. In this presentation Damian Ward, a partner at Mills Oakley, will:
1. Identify what the prior relevant principles are; 2. Identify and explain the changes; and 3. Identify ways in which you can ensure compliance so as to avoid infringements of the privacy of third parties, and avoid fines and penalties.
The Presenter:
Damian Ward is an experienced Commercial Litigation Lawyer and Partner at Mills Oakley Lawyers. Damian assists clients in the quick and cost effective resolution of disputes in all Courts and Tribunals and has a varied practice involving a number of sectors of law in straddling front end contract negotiation and drafting as well as dispute resolution. He acts for a range of public and private companies, financial institutions and high net worth individuals. Damian’s wide client base has allowed him to develop experience in a number of areas of law both as a commercial drafter and negotiator of agreements and dispute resolution lawyer. As a result of his work in this area he wrote Contract Negotiation Handbook (John Wiley). His book is a client friendly guide to the general law of contract, providing guidance on negotiation of contracts aimed to maximise benefits to a person or entity in business
