Overview
The Intergovernmental Relations (IGR) team plays an important role in the LGAQ’s Advocacy. The team works closely with our talented in-house subject matter experts to shape and deliver the Association’s advocacy strategy. The Lead - Intergovernmental Relations will draw on existing networks and build new relationships across federal and state government ministries and departments to enhance LGAQ’s advocacy capacity. This role provides an opportunity for intra and interstate travel.

This is a full time contract role up to June 2025 based from Newstead, Qld and may require some out of hours work. The right candidate for this role will be a team player who enjoys a busy work environment and will fit in with our collaborative culture.

Key Responsibilities
Whilst every day will be different, the key responsibilities of this role are to:

  • Develop strategic campaigns to progress LGAQ’s advocacy work
  • Provide rapid response to emergent policy and inter-governmental issues
  • Identify and evaluate current and future trends and other emerging policy areas affecting Local Government and formulate policies and strategies to address them
  • Undertake travel to represent LGAQ and engage with stakeholders and members
  • Provide advice and support to members including arranging meetings with members of parliament, ministerial staff, senior government officers or other stakeholders
  • Build relationships and networks across federal, state and local government
  • Liaise with Ministers, Ministerial Staff, Members of Parliament, Senior Government Officers, Industry and other external bodies to advance LGAQ’s advocacy agenda
  • Provide intergovernmental relations and strategic stakeholder engagement support internally across the LGAQ to assist in executing advocacy and other member-based responsibilities
  • Attend LGAQ events, Regional Organisation of Councils (ROC) meetings, Elected Member Updates (EMU) and other external meetings, to engage with members and represent LGAQ
  • Action assigned motions/resolutions, support other LGAQ team members to advance assigned resolutions and provide timely updates to assist members to track resolution progress
  • Lead, or contribute to, the on-time preparation and review of submissions
  • Participate, and work collaboratively in a segment team to build member engagement and loyalty
  • Adhere to all workplace relevant legislation and LGAQ policies
  • Contribute to the LGAQ culture through application of the CARE Behaviours and participation in workplace activities.

About You
To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Demonstrated collegiate approach to working with and listening to, colleagues and a passion for working with people in a team-based approach
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications and demonstrated continuous learning approach to personal and professional development
  • Experience with contemporary local government issues (desirable) and understanding of the ministerial and government decision making processes at the Local, State and Federal levels
  • Built and maintained effective working relationships with Federal and State Government contacts at all levels (Ministers, Ministerial Offices, Departments)
  • Proven ability to operate at a senior level to develop strategic campaigns and be a capable and confident advocate to achieve high impact advocacy outcomes
  • High level interpersonal, communications (written and verbal) skills and understanding of contemporary public policy communications and approaches
  • Proven ability to adapt to changing circumstances, think strategically and make critical decisions under pressure and initiate flexible and innovative problem - solving approaches in complex environments
  • Demonstrated Caring, Accountable, Respectful and Engaging (CARE) behaviours in the workplace
  • A current driver’s licence and the ability to travel.
